Rise of post COVID-19 cyber crimes
Since
the coronavirus outbreak most of the organizations in the world has
opened work from home options for their employees as measures of
business continuity . Some of these decisions were taken due to the
extended lockdowns imposed by certain countries and some as a part of
business strategy.
This
has created more surface for the cyber criminals to execute their
attacks as previously employees in an organization accessed the networks
through more secure and narrowed methods and now the access to networks
are mostly from home networks which may not be secured.
Cyber
attacks happen in many forms and some of us may not even know if these
had already taken place unless it involves financial or other fraudulent
activities which has actual impact to us as individuals. These crimes
take place now in the form of,
Malware, Spyware, Ransomware, Trojans, Viruses, Worms, Rootkits, Bootkits, Keyloggers, Screen scrapers, Exploits, Backdoors, Logic bombs, Payloads, Denial of service, Web shells, Web application security, Phishing, etc.
For
an example a Phishing attack could impact us by staling our bank
information to perform fraudulent transactions using our funds or a
malware/ spyware could be used to secretly use our webcam and monitor
our personal activity.
Therefore
taking necessary precautions as individuals may be necessary more than
before due to the current Covid-19 pandemic forcing most of us to work
from home. A simple step would be to ensure your personal device is
protected using a advanced protection virus guard other than the default
virus protection which is inbuilt to your operating system.
A simple USD 30.00 to 50.00 could make a major difference in your life, than risking your device to cyber criminals especially during a time like this.
